Unless you are an avid trout fisherman or own a boat that is capable of detecting the deepest pits of large reservoirs, autumn is the last chance for many bank fishermen to experience the few good days of fishing before the coming recession of bites in Winter. Many different species of fish are ramping up into their optimum temperatures though such as Musky, Pike, Perch and Carps. Personal Best Ozark Bass (8.5 Inches /…

A North-American Killifish and Its Current Complex There are multiple species of fish in the genus Fundulus that are commonly called by fishermen as, “Topminnows”. They are correct that this species is often seen at the top of the water but it is technically not a “minnow”. They are actually a Killifish, which span across all the Americas, Africa and Asia! Topminnows have a flat head with a mouth that is parallel with the eye.…

This is to show some of the current work I am doing on this project. A full article with citation will be posted later. There are many similar looking described and undescribed species amongst the spotted Corydoras of Lineage-8 Sub-clade 4. Two of the most commonly imported and most commonly misidentified by local fish store workers and even whole distributors is Corydoras agassizii and Corydoras ambiacus. These two species share similar waters and can be…

Prosobranch Pond Snails are a snail that are seen throughout the southern portion of The United States. They are commonly found in the Ozarks portion in the state of Missouri. In my case, I was visiting the Springfield Plataea portion. The creek name was “Wilson Creek” and they were seen throughout the moss like plants of the stream. This was later in the fall season so there were no fish to be seen because of…

This fish was originally imported from Columbia and saw much interest in the aquarium hobby during the 1960s. Even today it is still very common to find in local stores though they don’t look exactly like their wild-caught counterparts. They have become domesticated and the breeders have had a very long time to work with exemplifying certain traits. Aquarium breeders bring out more colorful traits through selecting the most colorful offspring and breeding them, resulting…

This specimen was identified by Corydoradinae expert and co-author of Identifying Corydoradinae Catfish, Ian Fuller who claimed it to be Corydoras sp. “CW115”. This is a one of the newer undescribed species from lineage 9 Corydoras. My image was published to Planetcatfish.com for their entry on Corydoras sp. “CW115”. This possibly unidentified species is from the 1Rio Manapiare in Venezuela. It is one of the newer generation of possible new species, given it is a CW-Number. This…

This fish is an amazingly beautiful cichlid from the Congo. This fish looks similar to another jewel cichlid which has the scientific name, Hemichromis lifalili. H. lifalili is redder in its coloration and does not share the gold band that appears on the lower portion of H. sp. “Monada” during its breeding coloration. There is still debate happening as to whether this fish will be declared a distrinct species, sub-species or determined to be a…
